教学目的和要求:
        Provide an introduction to shape casting of metals.
课程内容提要:
       1. Introduction
       2. Thermodynamics and Phase Diagrams:
       • Cooling and solidification behavior of pure metals and binary alloys
       3. Heat Transfer in Casting:
       • Heat extraction, solidification mode, shrinkage and porosity generation, feeding and Chvorinov’s rule, directional solidification, and riser design
       4. Fluid Flow in Casting:
       • Description the functions of various parts of the gating design 
       5. Introduction to Casting Processes:
       • Comparison of molds and processes for four different casting processes - sand casting, investment casting, permanent mold casting and die casting 
       6. Casting Microstructures:
       • Nucleation, growth, development of cast microstructures, constitutional supercooling
       7. Alloys & Melt Treatment:
       • Melting processes, melt treatment, solidification microstructures and properties of three common types of cast alloys – aluminum alloys, gray cast iron and ductile iron
       8. Solute Distribution during the solidification of binary alloys:
       • Scheil equation
       9. Computer Simulations
教材与参考书目:
        There is not a text book that includes all this material. However, the ASM Handbook Volume 15 (“Casting”) is a good reference guide
